"Facts about THAILAND"

THAILAND

The Kingdom of Thailand is in the middle of South East Asia, bordering Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar in the north and Malaysia in the south.

There are several distinct geographic regions. The north of the country is mountainous, whilst the northeast consists of the Khorat Plateau, bordered to the east by the Mekong River.

The centre of the country is dominated by the predominantly flat Chao Phraya river valley, which runs into the Gulf of Thailand. The south consists of the narrow Kra Isthmus that widens into the Malay Peninsula.

The capital is Bangkok in the central region, with the other major cities being Chiang Mai in the north, Nakhon Ratchasima in the north east, and Surat Thani in the south.

The population is estimated to be around 64 million spread over 76 provinces.

The Thai currency is the Baht (1 baht=100 satang) and the main sectors of the economy are agricultural, textile and tourism based. Thailand is the world's largest rice exporter with more than half of the available land being used for rice production. Around 10 million tourists visit each year predominantly visiting the beach and islands resorts in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, as well as the mountains in the North.

Religion

“Buddhist Temple in Nong Khai”

Thailand is overwhelmingly a Buddhist country, with 95% of the population following the Theravada tradition.

Of the remaining 5%, the majority are Muslims living mainly in the southern most provinces.

There is a very small proportion of Christians (mainly Catholics in the north east) and Sikhs and Hindus in the south.
